The Bad Beginning is the first book in Lemony Snicket's "A Series of Unfortunate Events," introducing the Baudelaire siblings: Violet, Klaus, and Sunny. The Baudelaires try to expose Olaf but find little help from adults like Mr. Poe. Their neighbor, Justice Strauss, offers kindness but cannot protect them legally. During the wedding ceremony rigged by Olaf, Violet cleverly uses her non-dominant hand to sign the marriage paper, making it invalid. Olaf's plan is foiled temporarily, but he escapes, warning the Baudelaires that he will continue to pursue them to get their fortune. The children are left to face an uncertain, dangerous future while staying united in their fight against Olaf.
