The Hostile Hospital is the eighth book in Lemony Snicket's "A Series of Unfortunate Events." After escaping the Village of Fowl Devotees, the Baudelaire orphans arrive at a general store and send a telegram to Mr. Poe explaining their dire situation—they have been wrongfully accused of murdering Jacques Snicket, Count Olaf's deceased accomplice. The Baudelaires then escape into a van belonging to "Volunteers Fighting Disease" (V.F.D.), a group that visits Heimlich Hospital to boost patients' morale.
At Heimlich Hospital, the Baudelaires volunteer to help Hal, a blind elder who guards the Library of Records. They sneak into the library at night to search for information about V.F.D. and discover a file suggesting one of their parents might have survived the fire. However, Esmé Squalor, Olaf's ally, enters intent on destroying the Baudelaires and the files to clear Olaf's name.
This book emphasizes the Baudelaires' resilience and intelligence as they face moral dilemmas, danger, and unravel secrets about their past and the mysterious organization V.F.D. while continuing their fight against Olaf.
