The Vile Village is the seventh book in Lemony Snicket's "A Series of Unfortunate Events." In this installment, the Baudelaire orphans arrive in the Village of Fowl Devotees (V.F.D.), a village governed by strict, unusual rules and overseen by the Council of Elders. The Baudelaires live under the care of Hector, the village handyman, but the environment is harsh and full of chores. The village is covered with crows, which play a mysterious role in the story.
The Baudelaires discover cryptic couplets left by the Quagmire triplets, their missing friends, which help them uncover Olaf's hiding place. Count Olaf appears disguised as Detective Dupin, framing the Baudelaires for crimes including the death of an innocent man named Jacques, leading to their arrest and imminent sentencing to be burned at the stake.
Using their cleverness, the children escape from the jail by weakening the mortar of the brick walls and rescue the Quagmires from the beak of the Fowl Fountain. However, they face a hostile mob and must flee the village, continuing their quest to evade Olaf and find safety.
