I find that a lace-up shoe meets the case very well. White training shoes are often worn by German doctors, and I find that they cushion my feet, which is important when you are standing most of the day. And because they are lace-up, you are safe to run in an emergency. For this reason alone, I would not recommend any other kind of footwear.
Many doctors like the clog type of shoe and they are fine in the OR and in some of the labs but I do not consider them suitable for on the wards. If you have to run to an emergency, you are extremely ungainly as you struggle to keep your shoes on your feet, and it is quite possible that you could lose one.
There is one disadvantage to lace-up training shoes and that is that they have a tendency to get hot during the course of the day. It is, therefore, best to get ones made of white leather, without too much padding.
