Design and Build

The Samsung Galaxy S21 is built quite well with Glass front (Gorilla Glass Victus) which is quite solid considering how expensive replacements can be but you would still need a protective case. The back is plastic with an aluminium frame. It also has IP68 dust/water resistant (up to 1.5m for 30 mins) rating to aid in those moments where the phone does come into contact with water. The phone is not as large, at 151.7×71.2×7.9mm and169g.

The phone’s display is a 6.20″ Dynamic AMOLED 2X screen with a refresh rate 120Hz. It also comes equipped with HDR10+ support and has a peak brightness of 1300 nits to make daylight viewing a joy. At 1080x2400px resolution and an aspect ratio of 20:9 with 421 pixels per inch. One of the features is an always-on display which will come in handy for long viewing.

User Interface and Performance

The Samsung Galaxy S21 5G comes installed with the latest Android 11 operating system skinned with Samsung’s own One UI 3.1. The new One UI 3.1 does not interfere too much with the native Andriod 11 with is welcome as the two now work well in tandem.  The user interface feels fast thanks to the Exynos 2100 (5 nm) with Octa-core CPU (1×2.9 GHz Cortex-X1 & 3×2.80 GHz Cortex-A78 & 4×2.2 GHz Cortex-A55) processor. Everyday use of the Samsung Galaxy S21 will so much better. Gaming will also be a breeze with the Mali-G78 MP14 GPU. Combined with the 120Hz refresh rate of the screen the gaming experience will be so much more enhanced.

Camera Quality

The phone comes equipped with a main triple rear camera setup, a wide-angle: 12 MP, f/1.8, 26mm, 1/1.76″, 1.8µm, Dual Pixel PDAF, OIS, an ultra-wide-angle: 12 MP, f/2.2, 13mm, 120˚, 1/2.55″ 1.4µm, Super Steady video; and a  Telephoto: 64 MP, f/2.0, 29mm, 1/1.72″, 0.8µm, PDAF, OIS, 1.1x optical zoom, 3x hybrid zoom. Shotting in daylight out of the Galaxy S21’s main camera is very appealing. You get a wide dynamic range and a healthy dose of colour saturation, though that last bit has been tuned down ever so slightly. The night shots and low light image quality is quite good. It exposes well and exhibits a wide dynamic range even before resorting to Night mode processing. The selfie camera is the same as the one that came with the S20 but comes with different processing. It is a 10 MP, f/2.2, 26mm, 1/3.24″, 1.22µm, wth Dual Pixel PDAF. The S21 goes for much sharper and grittier detail and the Dynamic range is nicely wide, and backlit scenes aren’t an issue either.

Video Recording

The phone’s video recording capabilities are of some high calibre owing to its 8K capabilities. Yes the Samsung Galaxy S21 can record videos in 8K meaning you might need to get the one with more storage as there is no expandable memory card slot. It features rear camera recording at; 8K@24fps, 4K@30/60fps, 1080p@30/60/240fps, 720p@960fps, HDR10+, stereo sound rec., gyro-EIS;  and front camera at; 4K@30/60fps, 1080p@30fps.

Storage

With 128GB of storage say goodbye to ever deleting your favourite photo moments. The flash storage comes equipped with UFS 3.1 which improves the read and write speed to complement the 5G. The Galaxy S21 does not have expandable storage via the SD Card which will not please a few heavy video recording users. And with 8K recording, storage can be used pretty fast. It comes with 8GB of RAM to aid in the multitasking and Dex support.

Battery Life

The Samsung Galaxy S21 comes equipped with a 4000mAh battery capable of fast charging at 25W with USB Power Delivery 3.0. It also has wireless charging at Fast Qi/PMA wireless charging 15W and can reverse that wirelessly at 4.5W. According to GSMARENA’s endurance test, it has a rating of 93hrs with 27hrs of 3G talk time, 11hrs of browsing and 15hrs of video playback.
