Purpose: Detects hidden (occult) blood in stool samples, a possible indicator of colon cancer, polyps, or GI bleeding
Sample Type: Stool specimen
Test Format:
Immunochemical (iFOBT or FIT) – more specific to human hemoglobin
Guaiac-based (gFOBT) – detects peroxidase activity of hemoglobin
Time to Results: Typically 5–10 minutes
Sensitivity & Specificity:
iFOBT: Higher sensitivity and specificity
gFOBT: May require dietary restrictions
Result Interpretation:
Two lines = Positive
One control line = Negative
No control line = Invalid
