Sulfur ointment is a topical medication containing **sulfur (sulphur)** as its active ingredient, typically in concentrations ranging from **2% to 10%**. It has been used for centuries to treat various skin conditions due to its antimicrobial, antifungal, keratolytic (exfoliating), and antiparasitic properties.  

       Common Uses

1.Scabies– Kills *Sarcoptes scabiei* mites (often combined with permethrin or used as an alternative).  

2.Acne– Helps unclog pores and reduce bacteria (*Cutibacterium acnes*).  

3. Seborrheic Dermatitis & Dandruff – Reduces flaking and fungal growth.  

 How It Works

- *Antimicrobial**: Sulfur releases sulfur dioxide, which kills bacteria, fungi, and parasites.  

- *Keratolytic**: Breaks down dead skin cells, helping exfoliation.  

- **Anti-inflammatory**: Reduces redness and irritation.  

*Application Instructions*

- Wash and dry the affected area before applying.  

- Apply a thin layer and gently massage into the skin.  

- Leave on for **8–12 hours** (for scabies) or as directed.  

- For acne/dermatitis, may be used overnight or as a short-contact treatment.  Apply leave it for 10- 15mins then rinse off,apply moisturizer and sunscreen.

- Rinse off if irritation occurs.  

       Side Effects

- Mild burning, stinging, or redness. 

- Dryness or peeling.  

- Rarely, allergic reactions (discontinue if severe irritation occurs).  

       Precautions

- Avoid contact with eyes and mucous membranes.  

- Do not use on broken or severely inflamed skin without medical advice.  

- May bleach clothing or bedding.  But not Skin

- Not typically recommended for pregnant/nursing women unless prescribed.
