Product details

1984 is a dystopian novel set in a totalitarian state called Oceania, where the Party—led by the figurehead Big Brother—controls every aspect of life. Citizens are constantly monitored through telescreens, language is restricted through Newspeak, and independent thought is considered a crime (thoughtcrime).

The protagonist, Winston Smith, works at the Ministry of Truth, where he alters historical records to fit the Party’s propaganda. Secretly, he despises the regime and dreams of rebellion. He begins a forbidden love affair with Julia, and for a time they believe they have found freedom.

However, they are eventually caught by the Thought Police. Winston is tortured in the Ministry of Love by O’Brien, who breaks his spirit. In the end, Winston betrays Julia under torture, and after being brainwashed, he accepts Party control and “loves Big Brother.”
