"A Memory of Love" by Bertrice Small is a historical romance novel set in the 12th century. The story follows Rhonwyn, a spirited Welsh noblewoman who is the love child of the Prince of Wales. When she is fifteen, Rhonwyn is betrothed to an English lord named Edward de Beaulieu as part of a political treaty. Untrained in the ways of noblewomanhood, she is swiftly taught to read, sew, and behave properly by her husband's aunt.
Rhonwyn accompanies Edward on a Crusade, where she is captured by Saracens and taken to the Islamic kingdom of Cinnebar. There, she is placed in the caliph's harem and experiences passionate and intense relationships, yet her heart remains true to Edward. The novel explores her adventurous and complex love life, filled with passion, danger, and intrigue. Rhonwyn is portrayed as a strong, skilled woman who can wield a swrd as well as any man and undergoes profound personal growth through the book.
Despite some plot inconsistencies and melodramatic elements, the novel is engaging for readers who enjoy richly detailed historical romance with sensual, epic storytelling.
