Books 12 and 13 of A Series of Unfortunate Events, titled "The Penultimate Peril" and "The End," continue the tragic adventures of the Baudelaire orphans.
In Book 12, "The Penultimate Peril," the Baudelaires arrive at the Hotel Denouement to work as concierges. They meet the hotel managers, including twins Frank and Ernest Denouement, and encounter many of the villains and guardians from the earlier books. The goal is to put Count Olaf on trial and find the mysterious sugar bowl. However, chaos ensues when Olaf threatens Dewey Denouement with a harpoon gun, which accidentally fatally wounds Dewey. The Baudelaires and Olaf end up on trial for Dewey’s murder but escape together after setting the hotel on fire. The book ends with them literally in the same boat as Olaf.
Book 13, "The End," finds the Baudelaires and Olaf shipwrecked on an island ruled by a man named Ishmael. The islanders turn against the Baudelaires, but a mutiny begins. They learn their parents were once leaders of the island. Ishmael harpoons Olaf, causing a deadly fungus infection to spread on the island. The Baudelaires try to save everyone with a cure found in hybrid apples, but the islanders decide to flee instead. Kit Snicket, who is pregnant, arrives and later dies after the Baudelaires help deliver her baby, whom they name Beatrice. One year later, the Baudelaires, along with baby Beatrice, set sail for the mainland, leaving their fate open-ended.
These final books complete the dark, mysterious saga of the Baudelaires, blending themes of survival, morality, and the unknown.
