"Ayesha at Last" by Uzma Jalaluddin is a contemporary romance novel that loosely retells Jane Austen's "Pride and Prejudice" set within a Canadian Muslim community. The story follows Ayesha Shamsi, a 20-something aspiring poet who works as a substitute teacher while paying off debts to her wealthy uncle. Although her family pressures her about marriage, especially compared to her younger cousin Hafsa who receives many proposals, Ayesha is reluctant to accept arranged marriage traditions.
Ayesha meets Khalid, a handsome, conservative Muslim man who works in tech and strongly believes in arranged marriage, planning to let his mother choose his spouse. Initially, they clash due to their contrasting views on faith and modern life. Ayesha ends up impersonating her cousin Hafsa at a mosque committee planning a youth conference, which throws her and Khalid into working closely together. This shared experience leads to a slow-burn romance filled with misunderstandings, cultural expectations, and personal growth.
The book explores themes of faith, family, cultural identity, and love, featuring a richly detailed Muslim Canadian community. Khalid is portrayed as a practicing Muslim not often represented positively in mainstream fiction, adding depth and nuance to the romantic story. The novel has moments of humor, conflict, and warmth as Ayesha and Khalid navigate their differences toward a potential future together.
