Book Lovers by Emily Henry, published in May 2022, is a romance novel about Nora Stephens, a cutthroat literary agent based in New York, who is convinced by her younger sister Libby to take a monthlong vacation to Sunshine Falls, North Carolina. Nora has spent much of her life sacrificing for Libby after their mother passed away, and this trip is meant to help Nora unwind and perhaps find a new direction.
In Sunshine Falls, Nora unexpectedly keeps running into Charlie Lastra, a brooding book editor from New York with whom she has a history of professional friction. Charlie is in town running his parents’ bookstore while helping them out. As they spend more time together, editing a book for one of Nora’s clients, their antagonistic relationship slowly shifts into something more complex and tender.
The story touches on themes of family bonds, grief, career ambitions, and self-discovery. Nora wrestles with her workaholic tendencies and the protective role she has played in her sister’s life. Through her interactions with Charlie, she begins to confront her own vulnerabilities and desires beyond her professional identity.
While Nora and Charlie's developing romance feels like an enemies-to-lovers tale with lots of witty banter, the novel goes deeper, exploring mental health, personal growth, and the courage to pursue one's dreams without sacrificing family or self.
