"Bosadi" by Kopano Matlwa, published in late 2025 by Jacana Media, is a poignant novel exploring gender-based violence, grief, immigration, and the burdens on Black women through the lives of two interconnected women in South Africa.
Naledi, once full of promise, endures an abusive marriage that erodes her identity, body, and sanity amid superficial domestic bliss like lockdown picnics and empty nurseries. Aunty, a Zimbabwean domestic worker bearing her own losses including children left behind, observes from the shadows, forging a fragile sisterhood marked by survival, tenderness, and power imbalances.
Alternating voices confront domestic violence hidden in "safe" homes, migration's scars, patriarchal enforcers including women, and women's resilience against erasure. Matlwa unflinchingly dissects expectations for Black women to endure without breaking.
