"Dark State" by Jack Slater is the first book in the Jason Trapp thriller series. It follows Jason Trapp, a former CIA special operations assassin who is believed to be dead after a mission gone wrong. Six months later, the United States faces a series of coordinated terrorist attacks, referred to as "Bloody Monday," which leave thousands dead. Trapp, cynical and betrayed by his own agency, is drawn back into a dangerous conspiracy involving terrorism, espion@ge, and high-level government intrigue.
The story starts with Trapp intervening at one of the attack sites, leading to his capture and involvement with former colleagues in a secret nuclear bunker under attack. As the plot unfolds, Trapp teams up with FBI agent Dani Carter and other allies to unravel the conspiracy behind the attacks, which involves Middle-Eastern terrorists and shadowy puppet masters. The novel features intense action, political thriller elements, digital spying, and complex characters, including a newly inaugurated President Nash.
The series opener delivers fast-paced storytelling, exploring themes of patriotism, betrayal, and covert warfare, setting the stage for future books in the series. Fans of political and espion@ge thrillers along the lines of Ryan, Reacher, and Bourne typically enjoy this title. The book was previously published under the title "Deep State" and is noted for its engaging plot and well-developed secondary characters, making Jason Trapp a compelling protagonist intensely driven by revenge and duty to his country.
