Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets is the second book in J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series, following Harry’s second year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. The story centers around the mysterious reopening of the Chamber of Secrets, a hidden chamber created by Salazar Slytherin, one of Hogwarts’ founders, which houses a deadly monster.
Summer and Warning: Harry spends a difficult summer with the Dursleys and is warned by Dobby, a house-elf, not to return to Hogwarts because of impending danger. Despite Dobby’s efforts to keep him away, Harry is rescued by Ron Weasley and his brothers in a flying car and returns to school.
Strange Attacks: At Hogwarts, students and a cat are found petrified with a chilling message: "The Chamber of Secrets has been opened. Enemies of the heir, beware." The school is thrown into fear as the legend says only Slytherin’s heir can open the Chamber and unleash a monster that purges the school of Muggle-born students.
Investigation and Clues: Harry, Ron, and Hermione suspect Draco Malfoy is the heir and use Polyjuice Potion to interrogate him but find he is innocent. Hermione is petrified, and the trio discovers the monster is a basilisk—a giant serpent that kills with direct eye contact and petrifies with indirect.
The Chamber and Tom Riddle: Ginny Weasley is taken into the Chamber. Harry and Ron find the entrance in the bathroom haunted by Moaning Myrtle. Inside, Harry confronts Tom Riddle, a memory preserved in a diary who reveals himself as the young Lord Voldemort and Slytherin’s heir. He manipulated Ginny to reopen the Chamber.
Battle and Rescue: With help from Dumbledore’s phoenix Fawkes and the Sorting Hat, Harry blinds and kills the basilisk with the of Gryffindor but is poisoned by its fang. He destroys the diary (a Horcrux) with the fang, defeating Riddle’s manifestation.
Aftermath: Harry frees Dobby by tricking Lucius Malfoy into giving the elf a sock. The petrified victims are cured, and Hogwarts celebrates Gryffindor’s victory.
