"Monster" by Frank E. Peretti is a thriller set in the wilderness of northern Idaho, involving a young couple, Reed and Rebecca Shelton, who encounter terrifying creatures during a survival weekend. The narrative follows Rebecca's abduction by a large, ape-like, red-colored Bigfoot female named Rachel, who is part of a small troop living in the forest. Initially perceived as the threat, these Bigfoot creatures are actually peaceful and fearful of a true monster: a genetically engineered human-chimpanzee hybrid that has escaped and caused destruction.
Rebecca bonds with the Bigfoot family members Jacob, Leah, and Rachel, understanding the mother's grief after losing her own offspring to the hybrid. The story reveals a conspiracy involving a scientist, Dr. Burkhardt, who created the hybrid and tries to cover up his actions. Amidst dangers and rescue attempts, themes of compassion, misunderstanding, and the clash between natural and unnatural forces are explored. The novel combines suspense with spiritual and ethical questions on science and creation.
