"Spaceboy" by David Walliams, illustrated by Adam Stower, is a funny and thrilling children's book set in the 1960s during the height of the US-Russian space race. The story follows Ruth, an orphaned twelve-year-old girl living on an ostrich farm with her cruel Aunt Dorothy. Ruth dreams of becoming an astronaut and finds solace in stargazing and caring for her one-legged rescue dog, Yuri, named after the real-life cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin.
One night, a flying saucer crashes on the farm, and Ruth discovers an alien-looking boy with a long head whom she calls Spaceboy. As Ruth tries to hide him from her aunt, the sheriff, the FBI, and even the President, she and Spaceboy (who later reveals he is not an alien but a boy named Kevin running away from a troubling home life) embark on a series of adventurous escapes. They encounter a secret US military base, a half-human-half-robot scientist named Dr. Schock, and a space mission at Cape Canaveral. The story combines humor, friendship, and thrilling escapades as Ruth and her new friend strive to stay safe and chase their dreams of space travel.
The book is noted for its fast-paced narrative, lively humor, engaging characters, and vivid illustrations, making it a highly entertaining read for children with themes of courage, kindness, and hope.
