The City of Ember by Jeanne DuPrau is a post-apocalyptic young adult novel set in an underground city called Ember, created by the Builders as a refuge for humanity. The city is facing a crisis: its great lamps that provide light are starting to fail, and food supplies are dwindling. The story follows two young protagonists, Lina Mayfleet and Doon Harrow, who uncover fragments of an ancient message left by the Builders. They believe this message holds the key to saving Ember.
Lina becomes a messenger, and Doon works in the city's underground Pipeworks, where they discover corruption among the city's leadership. Together, they decipher the ancient instructions revealing a secret escape route from Ember. Despite being accused and pursued by city guards, Lina, Doon, and Lina's younger sister Poppy manage to flee the city through a hidden river path. They reach the surface world for the first time, discovering that Ember was meant to keep its citizens safe but ignorant of the damaged world above. They send a weighted note back to Ember, revealing the path out and offering hope for its inhabitants to find a new future beyond their failing city.
