The Fighter of Auschwitz by Erik Brouwer tells the incredible true story of Leen Sanders, a Dutch boxing champion who was sent to Auschwitz concentration camp during World War II. After his arrival, Leen’s wife and children were killed, but he was recognized by a Nazi SS officer for his boxing skills. He was given a "privileged" role in the camp: entertaining the guards with boxing exhibitions and lessons, and placed in charge of his barracks block.
Leen used this position to help others survive despite the brutal conditions. He risked his life stealing food and clothing from the Nazis’ supplies and smuggling them to fellow prisoners, including vulnerable groups like Dutch women subjected to experiments by Dr. Mengele. He became a leader and protector among the prisoners, distributing food and defending others, even during the horrific death march at the war’s end.
His boxing skills not only saved his life but also enabled him to resist the Nazis' cruelty and become a hero to many in Auschwitz. The book highlights his courage, resilience, and selflessness in one of history's darkest chapters.
