The Gospel of Barnabas is an apocryphal text that presents an alternative narrative about Jesus, differing significantly from the canonical Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. It claims that Jesus did not die on the cross; instead, Judas Iscariot was made to resemble Jesus and was crucified in his place. The text emphasizes that Jesus was a prophet, not divine or the Son of God, aligning more closely with Islamic views of Jesus and explicitly predicting the coming of Muhammad as a future prophet.
The gospel strongly criticizes Paul and other early Christian figures, accusing them of corrupting Jesus' original teachings. It includes unique stories and teachings such as Jesus receiving the gospel from Gabriel on the Mount of Olives, his appointment of apostles including Barnabas, and parables not found in the canonical texts. The gospel ends with the command to Barnabas to write down the true story of Jesus.
Scholars widely regard this gospel as a later medieval or post-medieval work rather than an authentic early Christian text. It is considered a significant piece for understanding Islamic-Christian relations and biblical criticism but is not accepted as canonical by mainstream Christianity.
