The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka tells the story of Gregor Samsa, a traveling salesman who wakes up one morning to find himself transformed into a gigantic insect-like creature. The novella explores Gregor's struggle to adapt to his grotesque new body while grappling with his responsibilities and relationships.
Initially, Gregor is mainly concerned about missing work and the impact on his family, whose financial well-being depends on him. His family and employer are horrified when they see his transformation, and he gradually becomes isolated, confined to his room and rejected by those around him.
His sister, Grete, initially cares for him, but over time her compassion fades along with the rest of the family’s tolerance. Gregor's physical condition worsens, especially after his father injures him by throwing apples. He eventually dies, and the family feels relief and begins to plan for a new start in life without him.
Kafka's story is a powerful exploration of alienation, identity, and the human condition, using surrealism and dark symbolism to emphasize themes of isolation, guilt, and familial obligation.
This existential novella remains one of Kafka’s most famous works and a profound reflection on modern human anxieties.
