"The Metamorphosis" by Franz Kafka tells the story of Gregor Samsa, a traveling salesman who wakes up one morning to find himself transformed into a gigantic insect. Initially, Gregor tries to come to terms with his bizarre new condition while worrying about his job and family responsibilities. Unable to communicate clearly, he faces rejection and horror from his employer and family.
Over time, Gregor becomes increasingly isolated. His family shifts from shock and sympathy to resentment and neglect, as he is unable to contribute to the household financially. His sister Grete initially cares for him, but eventually sees him as a burden. Gregor's physical and emotional deterioration culminates in his lonely death.
The novella explores themes of alienation, identity, guilt, and the human condition. Gregor's transformation acts as a metaphor for the dehumanizing effects of modern life, societal expectations, and familial obligation. Kafka emphasizes existential angst through Gregor's tragic plight, his loss of humanity and subsequent erasure from his own family.
