The Old Man and the Sea by Ernest Hemingway is a novella about Santiago, an elderly Cuban fisherman who has gone 84 days without catching a fish. On the 85th day, he ventures far into the Gulf Stream and hooks an enormous marlin. A grueling two-day struggle follows as Santiago is pulled by the fish, enduring pain and exhaustion while respecting the marlin's strength and beauty. Finally, he harpoons the marlin and lashes it to his boat.
However, sharks attracted to the marlin's blood attack the catch during Santiago's return. Despite killing several, the sharks devour the marlin, leaving only a skeleton by the time Santiago reaches shore. Santiago returns home defeated yet dignified. His young friend Manolin, who loves and admires him, promises to fish with him again, giving Santiago hope and companionship.
The novella explores themes of endurance, pride, respect for nature, and the human spirit's resilience. It won Hemingway the Pulitzer Prize and contributed to his Nobel Prize for Literature.
