The People of Sparks by Jeanne DuPrau is the sequel to The City of Ember. The story picks up after the citizens of Ember have escaped their dying underground city. They arrive at the village of Sparks, where the inhabitants reluctantly agree to shelter the roughly 400 Emberite refugees for six months to teach them how to survive on the surface.
The novel explores the tensions and conflicts that arise between the Emberites and the people of Sparks due to cultural differences, scarce resources, and mutual mistrust. The Emberites struggle to adapt to life on the surface, learning farming and new survival skills, while the people of Sparks worry about their food supply through the winter. Conflicts escalate, fueled by misunderstandings and sabotage, with the Emberites eventually attacking the village market in desperation. The situation comes to a crisis with a fire threatening the village, leading to cooperation between both groups to save Sparks.
Lina and Doon, leaders from Ember, work toward peace and unity. By the end, Doon constructs a simple generator that powers a lightbulb, symbolizing hope and progress. The story highlights themes of prejudice, cooperation, resilience, and the challenges of community rebuilding in a post-apocalyptic world.
