The story begins in the late 1800s with Akoko, the daughter of a Luo chief in Yimbo village. Akoko is a strong-willed and outspoken girl who challenges the traditional, male-dominated society that often limits women's roles and rights.
Akoko marries Chief Owuor Kembo, who pays a high bride price to gain respect. Throughout her life, Akoko faces numerous hardships, including the loss of her husband and sons, but she remains resilient.
The narrative follows the lineage through Akoko's daughter Nyabera, who adopts Christianity and moves her family to live near a Catholic missionary, showing the clash and blend of traditions and colonial influence.
Nyabera’s daughter Awiti excels in education and becomes a teacher, breaking gender norms for her time.
Akoko’s grandson, Owuor, chooses priesthood over inheriting his tribal chieftainship, illustrating the shifts in cultural expectations over time.
The novel explores themes of tradition, female empowerment, cultural change, colonialism, and the evolving role of women in Kenyan society.
The title metaphorically depicts the flow of life and heritage beginning with Akoko as the source, and like a river, life continues through the generations overcoming obstacles and embracing change.
