The Bad Beginning: The Baudelaire orphans—Violet, Klaus, and Sunny—lose their parents in a fire and are placed in the care of Count Olaf, a villain who schemes to steal their inheritance. Olaf's plot to marry Violet and claim the fortune is foiled, but he escapes.
The Reptile Room: The Baudelaires live with Uncle Monty, a kindly herpetologist. Count Olaf, disguised as Stephano, returns to steal a deadly snake and plots against the family once more. Though he is exposed, Olaf escapes again.
The Wide Window: The orphans move in with Aunt Josephine, who is afraid of nearly everything. Olaf appears as Captain Sham, leading to more peril. The children rescue Josephine from a dangerous situation, only to lose her shortly after.
The Miserable Mill: Sent to work in a lumber mill, the Baudelaires discover Olaf disguised as Shirley, using hypnosis to control Klaus. They uncover the plot and escape, but Olaf eludes capture.
The Austere Academy: At Prufrock Preparatory School, the Baudelaires face bullies and Olaf disguised as Coach Genghis. The Quagmire triplets become friends but are kidnapped by Olaf’s crew. The Baudelaires are expelled, and new mysteries about the secret organization V.F.D. are hinted at.
Throughout the series, the orphans use their talents—Violet as an inventor, Klaus with his reading and research skills, and Sunny with her biting abilities—to outwit Olaf's various disguises and schemes. Adult characters often fail to see the dangers the children face, adding to their struggles as they seek safety and the truth about their family.
