aile Selassie (1892–1975) was Emperor of Ethiopia from 1930 until he was deposed in 1974. He is known for his efforts to modernize Ethiopia through reforms including the promulgation of a constitution, the abolition of slavery, and the establishment of the country's inaugural parliament. His leadership was marked by his resistance to Italian invasion during the Second Italo-Ethiopian War, his role in founding the Organization of African Unity, and his influence in pan-African and religious circles (particularly Rastafarianism).
Selassie’s reign ended in a coup d’état amid widespread protests over famine, economic hardship, and political repression. He was subsequently imprisoned and died under circumstances believed to be assassination. His legacy remains controversial, viewed as both a modernizer and a symbol of aristocratic and religious authority.
