Samia Suluhu Hassan is the sixth and first female president of Tanzania, serving since March 2021 after the death of John Pombe Magufuli. Born in Zanzibar in 1960, she has had a long political career including roles in Zanzibar’s government, as a Member of Parliament, Minister of State for Union Affairs, and as Tanzania’s first female vice-president (2015–2021).
