These Letters End in Tears is the debut novel of Cameroonian author Musih Tedji Xaviere. The book is a heart-wrenching and powerful forbidden love story between Bessem, a Christian girl with a rebellious heart, and Fatima, a Muslim girl who leads a double life. Set in Cameroon, where same-sex relationships face legal and societal persecution, the novel highlights the struggles of LGBTQ+ people in the country, celebrating their resilience and ability to find love and hope even under harsh conditions.
The story centers around Bessem's search for Fatima, who goes missing after her brother discovers her sexuality. Bessem writes unsent letters throughout her journey, expressing hope despite the despair. The title reflects the emotional letters and the poignant theme of love prevailing in adversity.
Musih Tedji Xaviere’s inspiration came from witnessing the strength and perseverance of queer communities in Cameroon. She aims to bring visibility to marginalized voices and tell a story of love and survival in a challenging social context.
Xaviere is a fiction writer based in the UK whose debut novel won the 2021 Pontas and JJ Bola Emerging Writers Prize, an international recognition for under-represented writers.
The novel has been praised for its authentic portrayal of queer love in Africa, its emotional depth, and its courageous storytelling, providing an important contribution to African queer literature.
