Vacuum: Use a powerhead vacuum to remove as much dirt, dust, and grime as possible before shampooing.

Pre-treat stains: Use a mixture of baking soda and water, a spot cleaning treatment, or soapy water to pre-treat stains. 

• Don't overdo the shampoo: Too much shampoo can leave residue that makes your carpet look dirty again quickly. 
• Work systematically: Start in a corner and work in parallel lines. Move slowly to allow the machine to effectively inject and extract the cleaning solution.
• Rinse: Rinse your carpets with water or a rinse aid to leave them feeling soft and fresh. 
• Make multiple passes: Make multiple passes over high-traffic areas or heavily soiled spots. 
• Apply a carpet protector: After cleaning, apply a carpet protector like 3m Scotch guard. 

It can take 6–10 hours for a carpet to dry completely, but it could take up to 24 hours depending on the time of year, humidity, temperature, and air circulation in your home.
