Product details

A high-yielding, vigorous variety known for its dark green leaves and thick, bulbous stems. It is particularly valued for its year-round adaptability, including resistance to heat and common diseases like tip-burn and white blister.

Excellent for flavoring a variety of dishes. Delicious when lightly steamed or sauteed for stir-fry. Superb for adding flavor to soups, stews and casseroles. Wash fruits, vegetables and herbs thoroughly before eating.

Key Characteristics

  • Appearance: Features attractive dark green leaves and thick, white-to-pale-green stalks that provide significant weight per bunch.
  • Maturity: Typically ready for harvest 40 to 45 days after transplanting.
  • Yield Potential: Highly productive, with an estimated yield of 20–30 tons per acre under optimal management.
  • Resilience: Excellent tolerance to heat, tip-burn, and white blister, making it suitable for both hot summer and year-round cultivation.

Growing & Planting Tips

  • Sowing: Seeds can be directly sown or started in trays. They typically germinate within 4–10 days.
  • Spacing: Recommended spacing is approximately 30 x 10 cm.
  • Care: Maintain consistent moisture; shallow roots mean the plant is sensitive to drying out, which can cause "bolting" (premature flowering).
  • Soil: Prefers well-drained, nutrient-rich soil with a near-neutral pH (6.5 to 7.0).

Culinary Uses

Spark Pak Choi is versatile in the kitchen due to its crisp stalks and tender leaves:

  • Stir-fry: Lightly sautéed with garlic, ginger, and soy sauce.
  • Soups: Added at the last minute to ramen or miso soup to retain crunch.
  • Steaming: Halved or quartered baby heads are ideal for steaming as an elegant side.
