Key features (what matters in the field):

Protection level / rating: NIJ or military plate classifications (e.g., soft armour II–IIIA; plates III–IV) — determines which threats are stopped.

Materials: modern high-performance fibers (Kevlar, Twaron), UHMWPE (Dyneema), ceramics, and hardened steel — tradeoffs in weight, multi-hit performance and blunt trauma.

Modularity / load-carrying: MOLLE webbing, removable pouches, cummerbunds and side plate pockets for mission flexibility.

Coverage & sizing: front/back plates, optional side/groin/neck/shoulder to balance protection vs mobility.

Ergonomics & fit: adjustable straps, shaped plates, and contoured carriers to reduce fatigue and improve weapon handling.

Weight vs mobility: heavier plates give more protection but reduce endurance and agility — mission dependent.

Ballistic trauma mitigation: internal trauma pads or energy-absorbing backing to reduce blunt force from impacts that don’t fully penetrate.

Quick-release systems: rapid removal in medical emergencies.

Ventilation & comfort: breathable mesh, spacer fabrics, and cut patterns to manage heat in hot environments.
