Product details

Azelaic acid is effective against a number of skin conditions, such as mild to moderate acne, melasma and rosacea,” Dr. Thiede said. “More recent research shows it may even help with hidradenitis suppurativa, alopecia, keratosis pilaris and psoriasis vulgaris.” It is very safe and gentle

Benefits:

A Marvel of Brightening: As a formulator, you'll appreciate Azelaic Acid's remarkable ability to fade dark spots, hyperpigmentation, and post-inflammatory marks. Enhance your brightening formulations and give your customers a luminous complexion they'll adore.

Gentle Exfoliation: Azelaic Acid gently exfoliates the skin's surface, promoting the natural shedding of dead skin cells. This ensures a smoother and more even skin texture, making it ideal for formulations catering to all skin types.

Acne Control Expertise: Formulate products that effectively target acne-prone skin. Azelaic Acid's anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties help combat acne-causing bacteria, reducing blemishes and preventing future breakouts.

Redness Relief: Your formulations can now address redness and irritation, as Azelaic Acid soothes inflamed skin, calming redness, and promoting a more balanced complexion.

Antioxidant Powerhouse: Elevate your antioxidant-rich products with Azelaic Acid's ability to neutralize free radicals. Shield your customers' skin from environmental stressors and support their skin's overall health.

How to Use:

As a formulator, you play a crucial role in ensuring the successful integration of Azelaic Acid into your formulations. Follow these guidelines for optimal results:

Recommended Concentration: Utilize Azelaic Acid at concentrations between 5% to 10% for its potent yet gentle effects on the skin.

pH Balancing Act: Maintain a pH level between 3.5 to 5.0 in your formulations to ensure Azelaic Acid remains stable and effective.

Patch Testing: Prior to releasing your formulations, conduct comprehensive patch tests to ensure compatibility and minimize the risk of adverse reactions.

Versatile Formulations: Azelaic Acid can be incorporated into various skincare products, including serums, creams, lotions, and spot treatments. Tailor the concentration based on the product's purpose and target audience.

Clear Usage Instructions: On the product labels, provide clear usage instructions for customers, advising them to apply your Azelaic Acid-infused product once or twice daily, depending on the product's formulation.

Azelaic acid works by:

  • clearing your pores of bacteria that may be causing irritation or breakouts
  • reducing inflammation so acne becomes less visible, less red, and less irritated
  • gently encouraging cell turnover so your skin heals more quickly and scarring is minimized

Azelaic acid can be used in gel, foam, or cream form. All forms have the same basic instructions for use:

  1. Wash the affected area thoroughly with warm water and pat dry. Use a cleanser or mild soap to make sure the area is clean.
  2. Wash your hands before applying the medication.
  3. Apply a small amount of medication to the affected area, rub it in, and let it dry completely.
  4. Once the medication has dried, you can apply cosmetics. There’s no need to cover or bandage your skin.

Keep in mind that you should avoid using astringents or “deep-cleansing” cleansers while you use azelaic acid.

Some people will need to apply the medication twice per day, but this will vary according to a doctor’s instructions.

Azelaic acid for acne scars

Some people use azelaic to treat acne scarring in addition to active outbreaks. Azelaic acid encourages cell turnover, which is a way to reduce how severe scarring appears.

It also prevents what’s known as melanin synthesis, the ability of your skin to produce pigments that can vary your skin’s tone.

If you’ve tried other topical medications to help with scarring or blemishes that’re slow to heal, azelaic acid might help. More research is needed to understand who this treatment works best for and how effective it can be.

Other uses for azelaic acid

Azelaic acid is also used for other skin conditions, such as hyperpigmentation, rosacea, and skin lightening.

Azelaic acid for hyperpigmentation

After a breakout, inflammation can result in hyperpigmentation on some areas of your skin. Azelaic acid stops discolored skin cells from populating.

A pilot study from 2011 showed azelaic acid can treat acne while evening out hyperpigmentation triggered by acne. Further research on skin of color has also shown that azelaic acid is safe and beneficial for this use.

Azelaic acid for skin lightening

The same property that makes azelaic acid effective for the treatment of inflammatory hyperpigmentation also enables it to lighten skin that’s discolored by melanin.

Using azelaic acid for skin lightening in patchy or blotchy areas of your skin due to melanin has been found effective, according to an older study.

Azelaic acid for rosacea

treatmenrt foAzelaic acid can reduce inflammation, making it an effective symptoms of rosacea. Clinical studies demonstrate that azelaic acid gel can continually improve the appearance of swelling and visible blood vessels caused by rosacea.

  1. It may soothe the skin

If you experience skin sensitivity, azelaic acid might be worth adding to your skincare routine. According to scientific research from 2013, azelaic acid is said to possess certain properties that can help to soothe unhappy skin.2 This means that it could help to reduce the appearance of blemishes like red bumps and swelling on the skin.3

  1. It may promote cell turnover

Another one of azelaic acids multiple benefits is that it can promote skin cell turnover. And that in itself has a knock-on effect. Increased cell production helps to get rid of dead skin cells (which can block pores) and therefore your pores will be less likely to get clogged.4 Essentially, this creates an exfoliation type effect.

  1. It may help to manage breakouts

This gentle exfoliation of the skin may also mean that you experience less breakouts. When applied to your skin, it penetrates the outer layer and then breaks up pimple causing blockages.5 These blockages include things like residual cosmetics, oil and dirt. Scientific studies have also shown that azelaic acid is effective against certain strains of bacteria like P acnes, which is thought to cause spots.6

  1. It may brighten the skin

If one of your skincare concerns is an uneven skin tone, then you may be in luck. One of the main benefits of azelaic acid is that it may have a brightening effect on your skin, which could help to even out any darker areas of your skin. Scientists have understood for a while that this type of acid has properties that fights free-radicals, as well as the enzyme tyrosinase which is needed for producing melanin.7,8

  1. It may reduce the appearance of scars

And last up in our list of azelaic acid benefits, is that it can help to reduce the appearance of scars on the skin. This is thanks to its ability to promote skin cell turnover.9
