Contact adhesive (also called contact cement, impact glue) is a type of adhesive in which both surfaces to be joined are coated with adhesive, allowed to become tacky (dry to touch), and then pressed together. The bond forms immediately on contact.
Many contact adhesives are based on neoprene rubber / polychloroprene solvents or rubber-modified formulations.
Feature | Description |
---|---|
Bond strength / grab | High immediate bonding strength (“initial grab”) once surfaces touch. |
Drying / open time | You apply adhesive to both surfaces, allow it to become tacky (often 10‑20 minutes) before joining them. |
Heat & water resistance | Moderate resistance to heat and moisture, though performance depends on formulation. |
Flexibility | The cured adhesive remains somewhat flexible, which is good for materials that expand, contract or bend. |
Substrates / compatibility | It can bond many materials: wood, plywood, laminates, veneers, metal, glass, rubber, leather, cloth, foam, some plastics, etc. |
Limitations / incompatibilities | Not suitable for some plastics such as polyethylene, polypropylene, expanded polystyrene (EPS) or Teflon. |
Viscosity / brushability | Formulated to be spreadable (brush or roller) so it can cover surfaces evenly. |
Shelf life / storage | Should be stored in sealed containers, away from heat/sun, to avoid solvent evaporation or skinning over. |
Color / appearance | Many contact adhesives are milky white when applied, turning clear or translucent when dry (tacky). |
