Horny Goat Weed, also known as Epimedium, is a genus of flowering plants in the Berberidaceae family, native to China, the Himalayas, Japan, and parts of Europe and Africa. The most commonly used species in supplements is Epimedium sagittatum or Epimedium grandiflorum. The plant is a low-growing perennial with heart-shaped, leathery leaves and spider-like flowers in spring, often featuring a long spur on the petals—giving rise to the common name "bishop's hat."
The herb is named for a legendary observation by a Chinese goat herder who noticed increased sexual activity in his herd after they grazed on the plant. It has been used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for centuries as an aphrodisiac, to treat erectile dysfunction, fatigue, joint pain, osteoporosis, and menopausal symptoms.
Key active compound: The primary bioactive ingredient is icariin, a flavonoid that acts as a weak phosphodiesterase-5 (PDE5) inhibitor, similar to prescription ED drugs like , though much less potent. It may support blood flow and n by increasing nitric oxide levels.
