The L (left) and R (right) markings on your headphones serve a specific purpose, and they're not just for ear canal placement. The audio source—whether a phone, computer, or MP3 player—sends left and right channel sounds to the appropriate headphones. While this may seem insignificant, it can make the difference between listening to music, movies, and other video content by associating the image (in the case of video) and sound with the direction they were intended to travel. Universal headphones detect which ear the earphone is in and send sound to each channel accordingly. Universal headphones have a chip in the ear cup that determines whether they are in the open air, in front of the ear, or closer to the back. When the headphones determine which ear is left and which is right, the sound is directed to the left channel for left-handed users and to the right for right-handed users. A second advantage is that when a user shares a headset with a friend, the universal headset detects the situation and sends a shared signal to both left and right. This means that all sound is transmitted evenly, rather than directional.
