Himalaya rock salt

Himalayan pink salt is a type of rock salt mined from ancient seabeds in the Punjab region of Pakistan, near the Himalayan foothills. Its distinctive pink color comes from trace minerals, primarily iron oxide. It is largely composed of sodium chloride, similar to regular table salt.

Himalayan pink salt is minimally processed and lacks the additives (like anti-caking agents) found in most table salts. 

• Minerals: It contains trace amounts of minerals like potassium, calcium, magnesium, and iron. However, these quantities are too small to provide significant nutritional benefits; you would need to consume an unsafe amount of salt to reach daily mineral requirements from this source alone.
• Sodium: Nutritionally, it contains a similar amount of sodium chloride to regular table salt (around 98%). Claims that it is lower in sodium or does not raise blood pressure are not scientifically supported; overall sodium intake, regardless of the salt type, is what matters for health conditions like high blood pressure.
• Iodine: Unlike most commercial table salts, Himalayan pink salt is not typically a source of added iodine, an essential mineral for thyroid health. Those using pink salt as their primary salt should ensure they get sufficient iodine from other dietary sources.
• Other claims: Assertions that it can detoxify the body, balance pH levels, or purify the air (in lamps) are not supported by scientific evidence. 

Common Uses

Beyond a food additive, Himalayan pink salt has popular non-dietary uses. 

• Culinary: It is used in cooking, seasoning, and as a finishing salt due to its unique texture and aesthetic appeal. Large salt slabs can also be used for cooking or serving food.
• Therapeutic/Wellness:
  • Bath Soaks: The salt can be added to warm baths to potentially soothe muscles and improve skin hydration, a popular spa treatment.
  • Salt Lamps: Large blocks of the salt are hollowed out with a light source inside to create a warm, ambient glow in a room, though air purification claims are unproven.
  • Salt Scrubs: Coarse grains can be mixed with oils (like olive or coconut oil) to create natural exfoliating body scrubs.
