"Blaze Wyndham" by Bertrice Small is a historical romance set during the reign of King Henry VIII in England, spanning the years 1521 to 1536. The story follows Blaze Wyndham, the eldest daughter of a once-prosperous but now impoverished noble family struggling to provide dowries for many daughters. Blaze is forced to marry an older titled man, Edmund, whom she initially views with bitterness but grows to love as he courts her patiently.
Tragedy strikes when Edmund dies in a hunting accident involving his nephew Tony, who secretly loves Blaze but is not initially chosen by her. Blaze becomes entangled with King Henry VIII after moving to the royal court with her married sister. The King forces Blaze into becoming his mistress through threats, including threatening her children, and then arranges for her to marry Anthony (Tony), Edmund’s nephew, whom she initially despises. Despite a rocky start with Anthony and complex family intrigues involving jealous siblings and murder attempts, Blaze and Anthony eventually develop a deep love.
The novel is marked by complex relationships, political intrigue, forced marriages, court drama, and themes of love, loyalty, and survival in Tudor England.
