Sheep's Clothing by Celia Dale is a sinister crime novel about two female con artists, Grace and Janice, who prey on vulnerable elderly women. Grace, a hardened and calculating ex-nurse in her sixties with a history of larceny, devises a ruthless scheme posing as Social Services representatives. Along with Janice, a passive young woman she met in Holloway prison and who depends on Grace for support, they gain access to elderly victims' homes by promising increased pensions due to bureaucratic errors.
The cons involve drugging the elderly victims with sleeping slipped into tea, then stealing valuables like radios, jewelry, clothes, and cash, leaving no trace. Their targets are carefully selected from places like betting shops, bingo halls, libraries, and supermarkets, focusing on those who live alone and are trusting.
The novel explores themes of greed, misplaced trust, and vulnerability, with vivid characterizations and attention to detail. The story becomes more complex as one victim dies of an overdose, prompting a detective investigation and involving a romantic subplot that complicates Janice’s loyalties.
