Product details

African Nightshade, locally known as Managu (Kikuyu), Mnavu (Swahili), Rinagu (Kisii), and Osuga (Luo), is a highly nutritious indigenous leafy vegetable belonging to the Solanum genus. It is esteemed for its rich nutritional profile and adaptability to various agro-ecological zones in Kenya and across East Africa. The plant is characterized by its erect, bushy growth habit, reaching heights of 0.5 to 1.0 meters, and bears thin, oval, slightly purplish leaves up to 15 cm in length. It produces numerous white flowers and round berries that vary in color from black to orange, depending on the species.

Nutritional and Medicinal Benefits:

African Nightshade leaves are rich in essential nutrients, including vitamins A, B, and C, iron, calcium, and phenolic compounds. Regular consumption contributes to improved vision, bone health, and immune function. Traditionally, it has been used to manage conditions such as high blood pressure and diabetes.

Agronomic Characteristics:

  • Growth Habit: Erect and bushy, facilitating ease of harvesting and management.
  • Maturity: Typically matures within 35 to 45 days from direct sowing, allowing for multiple harvests in a single growing season.
  • Soil Requirements: Thrives in well-drained, fertile soils rich in organic matter, with a pH range of 6.0 to 6.5. Sandy loam to friable clay soils are particularly suitable.
  • Climate Tolerance: Adaptable to a wide range of climatic conditions, performing well in both highland and lowland regions. It can be cultivated under rain-fed or irrigated systems, making it a reliable crop even in areas with variable rainfall.

Key Features

Cultivation Guidelines:

  • Sowing: Direct sowing is common, with seeds planted at a depth of 1.5 to 2.5 cm. Spacing recommendations are typically 20 cm between plants and 30 to 50 cm between rows, depending on the growth habit of the variety.
  • Irrigation: Regular watering is essential, especially during the vegetative growth stage. Drip irrigation systems can enhance water efficiency and reduce disease incidence.
  • Fertilization: Application of well-decomposed organic manure at a rate of 5–8 tons per acre is recommended. Top-dressing with nitrogenous fertilizers such as Calcium Ammonium Nitrate (CAN) at 15 g per square meter after the second weeding can boost leaf yield.
