Product details

Beetroot, scientifically known as Beta vulgaris, is a versatile biennial plant cultivated primarily for its swollen, fleshy root and nutrient-rich leaves. This crop is well-suited to a variety of climatic conditions, making it an ideal choice for both smallholder farmers and commercial producers in Kenya and similar agro-ecological zones.

Culinary and Nutritional Benefits:

Beetroot is renowned for its rich nutritional profile, being an excellent source of vitamins A, C, and K, as well as dietary fiber and essential minerals like iron and potassium. The roots can be consumed raw, boiled, roasted, or pickled, while the leaves are often used similarly to spinach in various dishes.

Agronomic Characteristics:

  • Growth Habit: Erect growth with a rosette of leaves; the plant develops a swollen taproot that varies in shape and color depending on the cultivar.
  • Leaf Attributes: Dark green to reddish leaves with prominent veins; edible and rich in nutrients.
  • Root Attributes: Smooth, firm roots that can be round, cylindrical, or conical; colors range from deep red to golden yellow.
  • Maturity: Typically matures in 55–65 days after sowing, though some early-maturing varieties can be ready in as little as 40 days.
  • Soil Requirements: Prefers well-drained, deep, and organic-rich soils with a pH of 6.0–7.5. Both clay and sandy soils are suitable if drainage is adequate.
  • Climate Tolerance: Thrives in cool environments with ideal temperatures between 15°C and 25°C. While it can tolerate light frost, extreme temperatures may adversely affect root development.

Cultivation Guidelines:

  • Sowing: Seeds are typically sown directly into the soil from early spring to mid-summer. Given that beetroot seeds are often clusters containing multiple embryos, thinning is necessary to ensure optimal spacing.
  • Spacing: Recommended spacing is 30 cm between rows and 10 cm between plants within a row.
  • Irrigation: Consistent moisture is crucial, especially during the vegetative growth stage and root swelling. Irrigation should be adjusted based on soil type and climatic conditions to prevent waterlogging and root rot.
