Product details

The biquinho chili is a mild, tear-drop shaped pepper from Brazil known for its fruity flavor and a distinct, pointed tip that resembles a small bird's beak.

Flavor and heat

  • Heat: Biquinho peppers have a very mild heat, typically ranging from 500 to 1,000 Scoville Heat Units (SHU), comparable to paprika and significantly less spicy than a jalapeño. Some varieties have been bred for higher heat, so it's always good to verify when purchasing seeds.
  • Flavor profile: They are described as having a sweet, tangy, and fruity flavor, sometimes with a slightly sour note. Some describe a floral aroma reminiscent of habaneros, but without the fire.
  • Texture: Biquinhos have a thick wall and a juicy, crunchy texture.

Culinary uses

Because of their mild, fruity taste and ornamental shape, biquinho peppers are used in a variety of dishes.

  • Pickled: They are most famously pickled and sold as "sweetie drops" or "pearl peppers," often used as a garnish or served on charcuterie boards.
  • Fresh: They can be eaten raw as a snack, or chopped into salsas, salads, and marinades.
  • Cooked: Biquinhos can be served as a topping on pizzas, blended into pestos, or added to soups, stews, and pasta.
  • Garnish: Their colorful appearance makes them a visually appealing garnish for a wide range of dishes.

Cultivation

Biquinho plants are popular among gardeners because they are easy to grow and produce an abundance of fruit.

  • Plant appearance: The plants grow to about 2–3 feet tall and produce many colorful, pearl-shaped fruits.
  • Growth: They are a slow-growing variety and prefer consistently moist soil after they begin to flower.
  • Harvesting: The peppers can be easily harvested by pulling them from the plant.
  • Fruit colors: Varieties are available in different colors, including red and yellow, with the yellow variant sometimes having a more citrusy flavor.
