What is a Rotary Sander & How It Works

A rotary sander has a round sanding pad (disc) which spins (rotates) and sometimes also oscillates.

The disc is fitted with abrasive sandpaper (often via hook‑and‑loop or adhesive backing).

Because of its circular motion, the outer edge of the disc moves faster than the inner edge, which can make it aggressive in material removal if not controlled.

It’s useful for tasks like removing paint, leveling surfaces, and reaching edges and trim where belt sanders may not reach.
