"Difference Between Advising And Shaming" by Ibn Rajab al-Hanbali is a classic Islamic treatise that explains the crucial distinction between sincere advising (naseehah) and shaming or condemning someone. Ibn Rajab emphasizes that sincere advising aims to help a person recognize and improve their faults constructively, done with kindness, discretion, and the intention of genuine benefit.
Advising is characterized by addressing a person directly, even if it involves telling them truths they dislike, but always with the purpose of guiding them back to the right path without humiliating them publicly. The author highlights that sincere advice should focus on correction without blame or exposing the person's faults to others.
In contrast, shaming is condemned because it exposes a person’s shortcomings with the intention of humiliating or blaming them, which leads to resentment rather than positive change. Shaming strips individuals of dignity, discourages acceptance of guidance, and often hides malice behind a facade of advice.
Ibn Rajab supports the respectful and discrete manners of the Salaf (early Muslims), who preferred private admonition over public criticism, emphasizing that true advising heals and reforms, while shaming harms and alienates.
