"The Old Man and the Sea" by Ernest Hemingway is a novella about Santiago, an aging Cuban fisherman who has endured 84 days without catching a fish, labeled as unlucky. Determined to break his streak, Santiago ventures far into the Gulf Stream and hooks an enormous marlin. What follows is an epic, grueling battle between the old man and the giant fish. Santiago admires and respects the marlin as a worthy opponent, enduring physical pain and exhaustion in his struggle to catch it. After finally harpooning the marlin, he lashes it to his boat, but on the journey back, sharks are attracted by the blood and devour much of the prize. Santiago fights valiantly to defend his catch but returns with only the marlin's skeleton.
The story highlights themes of perseverance, dignity, respect for nature, and man’s enduring struggle against adversity. Santiago’s relationship with a young boy, Manolin, adds a layer of friendship and hope to the narrative.
