Product details

Mansa Musa was the ninth emperor (mansa) of the Mali Empire in West Africa, reigning from approximately 1312 to 1337. He is renowned for his extraordinary wealth and for transforming Mali into a powerful and prosperous empire. Mansa Musa is particularly famous for his pilgrimage to Mecca in 1324, traveling with thousands of people and a vast amount of gold, which showcased Mali's riches to the wider world.

During his reign, Mansa Musa expanded the empire's territory and secured key trade routes. He also played a crucial role in developing Timbuktu into a major center of trade, learning, and Islamic culture by commissioning the construction of mosques and educational institutions, including the famous Djinguereber Mosque and the Sankore Madrasah (University of Sankore). His reign marked a golden age for the Mali Empire, characterized by urban growth, cultural flourishing, and extensive trade in gold, salt, and other goods.
