"Migrations" by Charlotte McConaghy is a dystopian novel set in a near future where most of the earth's wildlife has died out due to climate change, hunting, and habitat loss. The story follows Franny Stone, a woman haunted by a troubled past, as she embarks on a perilous journey to track the last migration of the Arctic terns, seabirds who undertake the longest migratory route in the world.

Franny convinces Ennis Malone, captain of an Alaskan fishing vessel, to take her on board as they follow the terns from Greenland to Antarctica in what might be their final migration. Along this journey, Franny's complex character is revealed—she is unpredictable, sleepwalks, and harbors secrets and trauma from her Irish childhood. The novel alternates between the present adventure and flashbacks of Franny's past, including her impulsive marriage to an ornithologist named Niall and her struggles with abandonment and identity.
