Dianetics: The Modern Science of Mental Health by L. Ron Hubbard is a controversial book published in 1950 that introduced a set of pseudoscientific ideas and practices about the mind, which later formed the basis of Scientology. Hubbard proposed that the mind has two parts: the conscious "analytical mind," which is rational and capable, and the subconscious "reactive mind," which records traumatic memories called "engrams" during moments of unconsciousness. These engrams are said to cause irrational fears, psychosomatic illnesses, and emotional problems.
The book presents "Dianetic auditing," a counseling technique aimed at identifying and clearing these engrams to help individuals achieve a state called "Clear," which Hubbard described as a state of superior mental and physical health with enhanced intelligence and moral clarity. Despite its popularity and commercial success, Dianetics has been widely criticized by scientists and medical professionals for lacking scientific evidence and being written in superficially scientific language. It remains a foundational text within Scientology but is not recognized as a legitimate medical or psychological treatment.
